Most traffic now arrives on phones first. Mobile-first design means planning for small screens, touch interactions, and variable connectivity before scaling up to desktop—not shrinking a desktop layout as an afterthought.

Design for thumbs, not cursors

Place primary actions within easy reach, use tap-friendly button sizes (minimum 44px targets), and avoid hover-only interactions that fail on touch devices. Sticky footers with primary CTAs work well for long mobile pages.

Speed on mobile networks

Compress images, lazy-load below-the-fold content, and minimize JavaScript bundles. Slow mobile pages hurt both UX and search rankings. Test on 3G throttling, not just office Wi-Fi.

Simplify navigation

Collapse complex menus into clear hierarchies. Sticky CTAs and progressive disclosure help users find what they need without scrolling endlessly. Mega-menus that work on desktop often fail on mobile—design separate patterns.

Forms and checkout on mobile

Use appropriate input types, enable autofill, break long forms into steps, and support wallet payments. Each friction point costs conversions disproportionately on mobile.

Test on real devices

Emulators miss subtle issues: keyboard overlap, safe areas on notched phones, and touch target overlap. Test on actual iOS and Android hardware across common screen sizes before launch.

NexisBlue designs campaign landing pages and product sites mobile-first by default—because that's where your audience lives.
